BJP to hold Chandigarh conclave on 1984 anti-Sikh violence

The one-day event titled Zakhm 84 De will feature survivors, legal experts and political leaders to discuss the massacre and rehabilitation.

The BJP will organise a one-day conclave and photographic exhibition in Chandigarh on Wednesday regarding the 1984 anti-Sikh violence. According to The New Indian Express, the event, titled ‘Zakhm 84 De’, will be held at Hotel Parkview in Sector 24 to discuss the massacre, alleged conspiracy, legal battles and rehabilitation of victims.

The programme will include a keynote address by former Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who represented victims in several Supreme Court proceedings. Other speakers include survivors and eyewitnesses such as Nirpreet Kaur, Jang Sher Singh, Darshan Kaur, Satpal Kaur and Bibi Jagdish Kaur. MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney, who lost five family members, will also participate.

Legal experts scheduled to speak include senior advocate HS Phoolka and retired Justice SN Dhingra, who headed a Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team in 2018. The sessions will cover first-hand accounts, alleged government-level complicity, investigation lapses and efforts to punish those responsible.

The event comes as the Congress prepares to hold an ‘Insaaf Rally’ in Sangrur on Wednesday, featuring Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. BJP national headquarters in-charge and MP Tarun Chugh questioned the propriety of Gandhi's visit to Punjab, stating the Congress leadership must answer for its role in securing justice.

In West Delhi, the BJP held a march led by Union Cabinet minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to commemorate the violence. Singh stated that 2,733 people were killed in Delhi and described the incident as genocide rather than a riot.
