UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya faces Brahmin community protest in Prayagraj
A BJP corporator allegedly assaulted a party worker during a meeting regarding the new Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya faced opposition from Brahmin community members during a meeting in Prayagraj, according to the Deccan Herald. The confrontation occurred over the Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026.
During the meeting, a local BJP corporator, Vinay Mishra from Allapur, allegedly assaulted a party worker named Rohit Tewari. Sources stated that Mishra grabbed and slapped Tewari several times after the worker repeatedly sought an explanation from Maurya regarding the party's stance on the regulations.
Tewari, a resident of Koraon, said that police officers present at the scene saved him. An FIR has been registered against Mishra after Tewari lodged a police complaint.
Mishra has denied the allegations, describing them as a conspiracy to tarnish his image. A video purportedly showing the questioning of Maurya and the subsequent assault has gone viral on social media.
Members of the Brahmin community condemned the incident and warned of serious consequences. Deepu Tewari commented on the video that Brahmin support should not be taken for granted by any party.
Upper-caste communities have previously staged protests against the new UGC regulations in parts of Uttar Pradesh, including a recent demonstration in Agra demanding a rollback.
