Punjab BJP holds event to remember 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims
Leaders accused the Congress party of carrying out a massacre and criticised the decision to hold a rally on November 1.
The Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organised the ‘Zakhm 84 De’ event on Wednesday to commemorate the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, according to The News Mill and ANI.
Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon accused the Congress party of carrying out a massacre in 1984. Dhillon stated that the programme aimed to make the younger generation aware of the violence and said no person from the Congress family has apologised to the Sikhs for what happened.
BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad questioned Rahul Gandhi regarding the decision to hold an INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Ground in Delhi on November 1. Prasad said the date reopens painful memories for the Sikh community and asked why the event could not have been scheduled for another time.
Prasad noted that Rahul Gandhi responded by saying the BJP is rattled by the rally. BJP leader RP Singh also criticised the Congress for the November 1 rally, alleging it was insensitive to victims. Singh demanded action against Kamal Nath and Jagdish Tytler, stating justice would begin by expelling them from Congress.
BJP leader HS Phoolka described the period from November 1 to November 4 as days of sorrow and darkness for the country. He urged that these days be observed as ‘Black Days’ and questioned the decision to hold a power show on November 1.
The 1984 anti-Sikh riots occurred after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. At least 3,000 people were killed during the riots, which involved mobs targeting Sikh communities across Delhi.
