The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena will not hold its annual Diwali celebration at Shivaji Park this year, according to the Hindustan Times.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Raj Thackeray announced on Wednesday that the party is cancelling its annual Dipotsav celebrations at Mumbai's Shivaji Park. The decision was made in response to the severe drought affecting the state, according to the Hindustan Times.
Thackeray stated in a video message that extravagant festivities would not be appropriate while rural Maharashtra faces a drought. He noted that farmers are under intense financial pressure and thousands are migrating to cities because of the situation.
The MNS chief also urged citizens to practice restraint during the Diwali period. He mentioned that the Dipotsav would be organised again next year if conditions improve.
The Maharashtra government has declared 85 per cent of the state as drought-hit following a lack of rain this year. The state has also announced an interim aid of Rs 5,000 for farmers before the Diwali festival.
The Dipotsav event typically features light decorations and synchronised firecracker displays at Shivaji Park, attracting thousands of people annually.
