Bengal BJP MLA alleges assault by party workers over extortion opposition

Subhashis Om was hospitalised with head and limb injuries after an alleged attack by party workers in Paschim Midnapore district.

Subhashis Om, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from the Debra constituency in West Bengal, was allegedly assaulted by his own party workers on Monday night, November 2, 2026, according to reports by The Hindu and Hindustan Times.

The legislator sustained injuries to his head and limbs and was initially admitted to a local hospital in Debra before being shifted to the Medinipur District Hospital for further treatment.

Mr Om filed a handwritten complaint at the Debra Police Station in Paschim Midnapore district, naming at least six people in the matter.

The MLA stated he was attacked after protesting against extortion and claimed the racket was continuing with help from district leadership. He told reporters that four to five people with him were also attacked.

BJP district chairperson Tanmoy Das said he was unaware of any extortion allegations by party workers and suggested that internal issues should be discussed privately rather than in public.

State panchayat and rural development minister Dilip Ghosh said the party would look into the matter if there was a quarrel between two groups.
