UP CM claims people paid up to Rs 50,000 for LPG connections under Congress

Yogi Adityanath criticised the previous UPA government during a subsidy distribution event in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Tuesday that individuals were forced to pay between Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000 to obtain an LPG cooking gas cylinder connection during the Congress government's tenure. According to reports by Mint and Deccan Herald, Adityanath made these comments at a Lucknow event held to distribute LPG refill subsidies to more than 1.89 crore beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).

The Chief Minister stated that before 2014, securing a gas connection was a difficult process involving significant bribes. He alleged that people often had to pay amounts of Rs 25,000, Rs 35,000, or Rs 50,000 in black money for a single connection. Adityanath claimed that under the current administration, the culture of bribery is being ended and subsidies are transferred directly into accounts.

During the function, the state government announced that eligible families under PMUY will receive one free LPG cylinder on both Holi and Diwali. An allocation of Rs 1,500 crore has been set aside to distribute these refill subsidies to eligible households.

Adityanath also cited a World Bank report noting that approximately 46 crore people in India have moved above the poverty line. He further stated that the state government would soon introduce a special package intended to help women become self-reliant.
