North Chennai residents seek two new Metro Rail corridors
The Federation of North Chennai Residents’ Welfare Associations has submitted petitions to Chennai Metro Rail Limited to improve regional connectivity.
The Federation of North Chennai Residents’ Welfare Associations recently submitted petitions to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) Managing Director Ashish Chatterjee seeking two new Metro Rail corridors, according to The Hindu.
One proposal requests an extension of the Madhavaram–Wimco Nagar corridor to include Madhavaram Asisi Nagar, Mathur, Manali, Manali New Town, Ennore, Kattivakkam, Ernavur and Tiruvottiyur. The federation has asked for the fast-tracking of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this 11-km stretch, which carries an estimated cost of ₹88 lakh.
A second proposal suggests a new corridor running from Mint to Sengundram. This route would pass through Moolakothalam, Basin Bridge, Vyasarpadi, Udayasuriyan Nagar, Sathyamurthy Nagar, M.K.B. Nagar, Ambedkar College junction, Erukkancheri High Road, Moolakadai, Madhavaram Roundtana and Kavangarai.
The federation stated that these routes would help people living and working in industrial zones, such as the Ennore port area. They also requested the creation of an Ennore Multimodal Transport Hub to combine different transport services.
Ashish Chatterjee told the delegation that the proposals will be reviewed and Metro Rail plans will be developed to tackle traffic congestion in North Chennai.
