Odisha woman dies after being carried 7 km on makeshift sling
A 23-year-old woman passed away while villagers transported her to a hospital following childbirth complications in Ganjam district.
A 23-year-old woman died on Tuesday while being transported on a makeshift sling for nearly 7 km to a hospital in Odisha’s Ganjam district. According to reports from The New Indian Express and Medical Dialogues, the incident occurred in Soradapalli village, located within the Beguniapada block.
The woman had given birth to a baby girl at her home in the village but began experiencing heavy bleeding. Because the village lacks an all-weather road, an ambulance was unable to reach the location to provide medical assistance.
Villagers attempted to move the critically ill woman toward Sumandal hospital using a makeshift sling, but she passed away before arriving. The newborn baby is receiving medical care at Kodala Hospital.
The incident highlights difficulties in accessing emergency healthcare in remote areas where a lack of motorable roads and ambulance services exists. In October, a 35-year-old pregnant woman in the Kashipur block of Rayagada district was also carried 5 km in a sling to reach an ambulance, later delivering a stillborn baby at a district hospital.
