PMK president demands 100 per cent caste-based proportional representation

Anbumani Ramadoss says current reservation system in Tamil Nadu does not achieve full social justice.

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss has called for a stronger movement to secure 100 per cent caste-based proportional representation in Tamil Nadu. Speaking on November 4, which marks the centenary of communal reservation in the state, Ramadoss stated that true social justice is only possible when every community receives reservation according to its population size.

According to reports from ANI and The News Mill, the date marks the 1927 passing of the third Communal Government Order (G.O. No. 1071) in the Madras Presidency. This order provided for 100 per cent communal representation and was implemented by then Chief Minister P.

Subbarayan and Education Minister Kumbakonam Muthiah Mudaliar.

The policy remained in effect until the 1950 Madras High Court ruling in the Champakam Dorairajan case. Following the 1951 First Amendment to the Constitution, a new framework was established with 25 per cent reservation for Backwards Classes and 18 per cent for Scheduled Castes. While the total reservation in Tamil Nadu has since risen to 69 per cent, Ramadoss asserted the current system still falls short.

Ramadoss welcomed the Tamil Nadu government's decision to conduct a social justice survey, noting the move followed a demand by the PMK. He urged the government, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, to move quickly with the planned commission for this purpose.
