Scotch whisky prices in Delhi to fall after customs duty cut

The Delhi Excise Department has begun implementing reduced import duties on British spirits following a trade agreement with the United Kingdom.

Prices for certain premium Scotch whiskies are expected to decrease in Delhi as the Delhi Excise Department rolls out a reduction in customs duty on British liquor, according to Telegraph India on Wednesday.

The reduction follows a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement signed between India and the United Kingdom (UK) last year. Under this deal, India will lower the duty on UK whisky and gin from 150 per cent to 75 per cent, eventually reaching 40 per cent in the 10th year.

A senior excise official stated that the process has started and some liquor-importing wholesalers have received the revised costs, adding that all segments will be covered in time. Officials noted that revised prices could appear this month.

Experts suggest that premium whiskies such as Johnnie Walker may see price drops of Rs 200-300 per bottle. For Scotch brands bottled in India, including Black Dog, 100 Pipers, Passport, Vat 69 and Black & White, prices may fall by Rs 100-150.

In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, prices for several UK-origin liquor brands have already decreased by approximately 5-15 per cent.

The Delhi government is also working on a new excise regime. Officials said a draft of the new policy has been submitted to the Centre for approval.
