Producer Namit Malhotra compares Ramayana to Avatar and The Odyssey
The filmmaker says the production aims to provide a spectacle on a scale never seen before in India.
Producer Namit Malhotra has acknowledged that many in India question the need for another adaptation of the Ramayana. Speaking to news agency PTI during a special screening in Mumbai on Tuesday, Malhotra said the film aims to show a version of the story never seen before.
The film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is being produced by Prime Focus and Monster Mind Creations. Malhotra compared the scale of the production to movies such as Avatar, Avengers, Spider-Man, and The Odyssey.
According to the Hindustan Times, the film has a reported budget of ₹4000 crore and features visual effects from the studio DNEG. The makers are marketing the project as India's first film equivalent to Hollywood blockbusters.
The production stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana. It will be released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.
Sony Pictures will handle global distribution outside of India, while Dharma Productions will distribute the film in the Hindi-speaking market. The first part is scheduled for a worldwide release on November 5, 2026, with the second part set for Diwali 2027.
