Elephant carcass found in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district
The discovery marks the fourth elephant death reported in the state's forest regions over the last two months, according to The Assam Tribune.
A dead elephant was discovered in a field near Tankura village in West Singhbhum district on Wednesday, according to The Assam Tribune.
Villagers reported that a herd of approximately 20 elephants entered the village limits on Tuesday evening. Residents claimed they informed the Forest Department and requested assistance, but no team arrived, forcing them to spend the night attempting to drive the animals away.
The exact cause of the death has not been confirmed, though villagers suspect electrocution. An investigation is expected following a post-mortem report.
This incident follows other recent deaths in the state, including a female elephant found dead in Bhangaon village in early October. In that case, villagers noted the animal's tusks were missing, leading to suspicions of poaching.
In Latehar district, an elephant died on September 7 after contacting a live electric wire in Komar village. Officials suspected the animal hit electrified fencing used to protect crops and houses.
The region has seen seven elephant deaths over the past year. Residents in forest-bordering villages have increasingly used electric fencing, sometimes exceeding prescribed wattage limits, to protect property from elephant movement.
