Thalassemia Major woman in Gujarat gives birth to healthy child
The delivery in Ahmedabad marks only the second successful birth for a mother with the condition in the state over the last 10 years.
A 25-year-old woman named Alfina, a resident of Juhapura, has given birth to a healthy eight-day-old child in Ahmedabad. According to The Times of India, this is only the second successful delivery for a Thalassemia Major mother in Gujarat in the last 10 years.
Alfina has undergone blood transfusions since she was two years old. She said she realised the implications of her condition as she grew up and expressed appreciation for her husband, who married her despite the possibility of the child inheriting the condition.
Treating doctor Dr Anil Khatri, a neonatologist, said that while the lifespan for Thalassemia Major patients was previously limited, patients can now lead normal lives with proper medication. He stated that the case highlights possibilities for hundreds of women.
The medical team included obstetrician-gynaecologist Dr Uma Khatri and endocrinologist Dr Akshay Khatri. Dr Khatri said managing the pregnancy required balancing maternal chronic anaemia while avoiding iron overload in vital organs.
To ensure safety, the patient's vitals were checked every month, and every fortnight over the last two months. The health of the fetus was also monitored throughout the process, according to Dr Khatri.
