Suvendu Adhikari urges migrant workers to return to West Bengal

The Chief Minister cited the VB-G RAM G scheme, which guarantees 125 days of work, as an incentive for labourers to return.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday urged migrant workers from the state to return home to work with their families. According to The Hindu, Adhikari cited the VB-G RAM G scheme, which provides a guarantee of 125 days of work and Rs 34,500 per annum for each job card holder, as a primary reason for their return.

Speaking after a review meeting with the panchayat department, Adhikari stated that the state is working to meet a central target of 22 crore person-days. He noted that joint work allocations from the Centre and the state total Rs 12,000 crore. Currently, the state has produced 65.62 lakh person-days of work, with 7.09 lakh people employed daily.

Panchayat Minister Dilip Ghosh said the government intends to raise daily employment to 10 lakh person-days by December, with a further target of 17 lakh. Ghosh also alleged that the previous state government lost at least Rs 80,000 crore over four years due to corruption.

Adhikari mentioned that the Centre cancelled 31 lakh fraudulent job cards during the MGNREGA regime. Following central clearance, the state resolved Aadhaar seeding issues and issued approximately 10 lakh new job cards. The state currently holds about 2.3 crore Gramin Rozgar Guarantee Cards.

To strengthen panchayat administration, the Cabinet has approved recruiting 7,190 personnel through the Public Service Commission. Adhikari said these staff members are expected to be deployed by April 2027, following amendments to recruitment rules after the Assembly session. Additionally, 1,000 contractual workers will be hired for one year to address manpower shortages.
