Elephant carcass found in Jharkhand's West Singhbhum district
The discovery marks the fourth elephant death reported across the state's forest regions in the last two months, according to The Assam Tribune.
An elephant carcass was discovered in a field near Tankura village in West Singhbhum district on Wednesday, according to The Assam Tribune.
Local residents reported that a herd of approximately 20 elephants entered the village limits on Tuesday evening. Villagers stated they contacted the Forest Department for help, but no officials arrived, forcing residents to spend the night attempting to drive the animals away.
The exact cause of the death remains unconfirmed, though villagers suspect electrocution. An investigation into the cause will follow the post-mortem report.
This incident follows other recent deaths in the state, including a female elephant found dead in Bhangaon village in early October with missing tusks. On October 28, another elephant was found dead in the Bishunpur forest of Latehar district, where officials suspected a clash with another elephant.
A previous death occurred on September 7 in Komar village, Latehar, where an elephant reportedly died after contact with electrified fencing. Officials have recorded seven elephant deaths in this region over the past year.
Increased elephant movement through villages near forests has led residents to use dangerous protection methods, such as installing electric fencing that exceeds prescribed wattage limits or connecting it to AC mains.
