Assam to dismiss government employees for practicing polygamy

The state cabinet approved rule amendments making polygamy a ground for dismissal and permanent disqualification from future government jobs.

The Assam cabinet has approved an amendment to the Assam Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1964, to dismiss state government employees found practicing polygamy, according to reports by The Sentinel and Hindustan Times.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision on 3 November 2026, following a cabinet meeting. Under the new Clause 6 of Rule 7, employees found guilty of entering a subsequent marriage while a spouse is alive will face termination and a permanent ban from future government employment.

Sarma stated that the move follows the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. He noted that while such employees were previously only suspended, the new penalty is more stringent. The provisions will apply to Hindus, Muslims, and Christians, though the UCC excludes Scheduled Tribes.

The cabinet also recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the July 2026 flash floods in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, which caused over 100 deaths. Sarma said the government will formally write to the agency within 10 days.

Other approvals included allocating approximately 6,000 bighas of land in Nellie for a new Defence Manufacturing Park. Additionally, the government increased the paddy Minimum Support Price to Rs 2,640 per quintal by adding a Rs 200 bonus.
