IPS officer Anurag Sujania resigns after being removed as Sagar SP
The 2014-batch officer submitted his resignation following his transfer after a hooch tragedy in Sagar district.
Anurag Sujania, a 2014-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has resigned from government service. According to reports from Hindustan Times, Sujania submitted his resignation on November 2, shortly after being moved from his role as the superintendent of police (SP) in Sagar.
Sujania was transferred to the police headquarters in Bhopal as an assistant inspector general (AIG) on October 27. This move coincided with the transfer of Sagar collector Pratibha Pal. A senior IPS officer stated that Sujania resigned for personal reasons and that the request has been sent to the state government.
The administrative changes occurred after a hooch tragedy in the Banda area of Sagar district on September 7. In that incident, at least 20 people died after consuming spurious liquor, while 100 others required hospitalisation. The state government has since appointed a one-man judicial inquiry led by retired Justice VPS Chauhan to investigate the matter.
Sujania previously served as the SP in Morena, where 24 people died from illicit liquor in 2021. Former chief minister Digvijaya Singh had criticised Sujania regarding that incident, noting that an investigation then suggested illegal sales occurred under police protection.
The state government has not yet decided on the resignation. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav held a meeting with senior police officers to review the law and order situation and discuss curbing the liquor mafia in Madhya Pradesh.
