Magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits China's Xinjiang region near Ladakh border

Tremors from the earthquake were reportedly felt across parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, according to the National Centre for Seismology.

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck China’s Xinjiang region near the Ladakh border late on Thursday, according to News18 reporting on the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) data.

The NCS stated on X that the earthquake occurred at 10:26 pm IST on November 5, 2026, at a depth of 164 kilometres. The epicentre was located at latitude 35.587° North and longitude 78.130° East.

Tremors from the quake were reportedly felt across parts of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and Ladakh. There are currently no confirmed reports of casualties or damage.

This tremor follows a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in China’s Tibet region weeks ago, which state news agency Xinhua said killed at least 16 people and injured 32 others. That earthquake, which struck at a depth of 10 kilometres, caused more than 300 houses to collapse.

China has experienced other deadly tremors in recent years, including an earthquake in Tingri county, Tibet, in January 2025 that killed at least 126 people.
