Kochi meeting to discuss rehabilitation of Mundamveli P&T Apartment residents
A high-level meeting is scheduled for Saturday to address the demands of 78 families who have been protesting for 100 days.
A high-level meeting will be held in Kochi on Saturday, November 7, 2026, to discuss the rehabilitation of 78 families from the P&T Apartment Complex in Mundamveli, Ernakulam. According to The Hindu, the residents have been conducting an indefinite protest that reached its 100th day earlier this week.
Kochi MLA Mohammed Shiyas met with Minister for Local Self-Government K.M. Shaji and P&T Apartment Protest Committee president Abhilash P. Parameswaran in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Shiyas handed over a memorandum detailing the residents' demands.
Mr. Shiyas said the Minister has assigned two department-level secretaries to find a solution and noted that the Minister himself is likely to attend the upcoming meeting. The protest committee has threatened to intensify its agitation due to the slow progress regarding permanent rehabilitation and compensation.
The committee is requesting that the government identify land and build a new housing project. Other options under consideration include a one-time financial assistance package or government financial support for a housing project. Mr.
Parameswaran stated that the latter two options could lead families into more debt.
The complex, consisting of two four-storey towers, was built by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) at an estimated cost of over Rs 14.62 crore. It was intended to rehabilitate 77 families from the demolished P&T Colony in the Gandhi Nagar division of the Kochi Corporation.
The State government previously ordered a Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) probe into alleged corruption at the complex. A VACB team led by DySP P. Rajkumar conducted a preliminary inquiry at the site on October 5.
