Trump Jr backs Vance on Iran war causing Republican midterm defeat

Vice President JD Vance blamed the conflict with Iran and rising living costs for the party's loss of control in Congress.

US Vice President JD Vance blamed the war with Iran for the Republican Party's defeat in the 2026 midterm elections, a sentiment endorsed by Donald Trump Jr. According to reports from the Times of India, Mint, and the Economic Times, the Republican losses occurred as Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress.

Vance stated on X that the electoral setback was driven by voter dissatisfaction regarding the Iran conflict, inflation, the cost of living, an America First approach, and the US relationship with Israel. He noted that voters who previously supported the administration had defected to the Democrats due to these concerns.

Donald Trump Jr reposted Vance's assessment, agreeing with the Vice President's comments. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump acknowledged that the war contributed to the defeat by increasing gasoline prices in the short term, though he stated he would take the same action to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Trump also suggested that the Republican losses were partly because he was not personally on the ballot. He claimed that if he had been, the party would have won by a landslide.

The midterm results saw Democrats projected to hold 54 seats in the Senate, including independents who caucus with them, against 44 Republicans. The party flipped at least seven Republican-held Senate seats and more than two dozen House districts.
