Trump says Iran war was necessary despite Republican midterm losses

The US President admitted the conflict impacted election results but maintained that preventing a nuclear Iran is essential.

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the war with Iran was a major factor in the Republican Party's midterm election defeat. Speaking at the White House, Trump told reporters that the assessment by Vice President JD Vance regarding the conflict's role in the loss was “largely true” because it caused short-term increases in petrol prices.

According to reports from News18, Trump insisted he would make the same decision again, stating that preventing Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon is the only long-term answer. He expressed no regrets about the military action and claimed Republicans could have won if he had been on the ballot personally.

The midterm elections resulted in Democrats gaining control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. This shift allows the Democratic Party to investigate the Trump administration and block legislation, though Trump stated he is willing to work with them while reserving his right to veto opposing bills.

Vice President JD Vance had previously argued that the war alienated voters. According to Pragativadi, Vance noted that many Republican supporters switched to Democratic candidates due to the conflict, rising living costs, and inflation.

The political situation follows reports from The Federal that US strikes hit sites on Qeshm Island and in Bandar Lengeh a day before the elections. While peace talks continue through Qatari mediators, speculation remains regarding whether the US and Israel will move to a more decisive phase of the conflict.
