Democratic sweep in US midterms could reshape global foreign policy
The loss of House and Senate control by Republicans may impact US relations with Iran, Israel, India and Canada, according to the Times of India.
US President Donald Trump has faced a midterm election defeat as Democrats swept both the House and Senate, according to the Times of India. The shift in congressional power is being watched globally for its potential impact on Washington’s foreign policy and international alliances.
In Iran, Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said on Wednesday that the US midterm results would not change Washington's hostility towards Tehran. In a written message for Iran's annual November 4 anti-US commemoration, Khamenei stated that those hoping for a shift in behaviour between political parties in the US system are mistaken.
Israel faces uncertainty regarding future US support, with analysts suggesting the Democratic takeover could lead to renewed diplomatic efforts with Tehran or intense military operations. Democratic control of Congress may also increase scrutiny of Israeli policy and US military assistance, according to the Jerusalem Post.
India could face renewed pressure to conclude a trade agreement as Trump seeks economic gains. An analysis by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) suggests Trump might use executive powers to maintain pressure on trading partners, including India, to demonstrate American influence.
The GTRI noted the US could push for access to Indian markets and commitments to purchase $500 billion worth of American goods over five years. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated on Tuesday that the Trump administration had already begun softening some demands ahead of the results.
