US Vice President Vance blames Iran war for Republican midterm losses

JD Vance stated that the conflict in Iran caused voters to defect to Democrats during the 2026 midterm elections.

United States Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday blamed the war in Iran for the Republican Party's losses in the 2026 midterm elections, according to the Economic Times. Vance stated in a post on X that the conflict was the reason for the defeat and noted that the president had also made similar comments.

Vance claimed that voters who supported him and President Donald Trump in 2024 switched to Democrats due to the war. He cited polling suggesting that voters who abandoned Republicans identified four reasons for doing so: ending the war, focusing on inflation and the cost of living, putting America First, and changing the US relationship with Israel.

The election results saw Democrats win majorities in both the House and the Senate, creating a divided government. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York said the party would work to deliver the change voters deserve.

Responding to Vance's comments, President Trump told reporters that he would get along with Democrats unless they are destructive. Regarding the conflict, Trump said, "You can't let Iran have a nuclear weapon. You have no choice."

In Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei dismissed the idea that US partisan shifts would change the approach to the Islamic Republic. Khamenei stated on social media that those hoping for a change in behaviour by giving concessions to America are gravely mistaken.
