Bihar to introduce regional languages in primary classes from 2026-27
State-run schools will offer instruction in six local languages for Classes 1 and 2 to promote learning through native tongues.
The Bihar government has decided to implement regional language instruction for students in Classes 1 and 2 across all state-run schools starting from the 2026-27 academic session, according to Times Now.
Education Minister Mithlesh Tiwary said on Tuesday that the move aims to encourage learning through a child's native language at the primary level, following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has been tasked with creating textbooks in six languages: Bhojpuri, Magahi, Surjapuri, Bajjika, Maithili, and Angika.
SCERT Director Yatendra Kumar Pal confirmed that these books are being developed with the help of language experts and teachers for the upcoming session.
The government plans to extend this arrangement to students in Classes 3 to 5 in the future, with specific textbooks being developed for those grades as well.
SCERT lecturer Jainendra Kumar Dost said the initiative follows the National Curriculum Framework 2023 and will help children connect with local traditions, occupations, and agriculture while building confidence in the school environment.
