Two dead as building collapses in Delhi's Chawri Bazar

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has suspended two Municipal Corporation of Delhi engineers and ordered an FIR against the contractor.

A three-storey building under construction collapsed in Old Delhi's Chawri Bazar area near the Chawri Bazar Metro station on Thursday morning. According to reports from The Assam Tribune, Hindustan Times, and Deccan Chronicle, the incident occurred around 9:50 am in Gali Sitara and has claimed two lives.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site and announced the immediate suspension of a Junior Engineer (JE) and an Assistant Engineer (AE) of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). She also confirmed that an FIR has been registered against the contractor responsible for the construction.

The building, which consisted of a ground floor and two additional floors, was undergoing slab-casting work when the collapse happened. A worker at the site told reporters that wooden supports under the slab began creaking before the structure gave way.

DCP (Central District) Rohit Rajbir Singh stated that the building adjacent to the collapsed structure is in a precarious condition. While two bodies have been recovered, officials noted that more people were feared trapped under the debris.

Mayor Pravesh Wahi said a team has been constituted under the Municipal Commissioner to submit a report within three days. Chief Minister Gupta has directed officials to ensure medical treatment for the injured and provide ex-gratia assistance to the affected families.
