Delhi CM orders suspension of engineers after Chawri Bazar building collapse
Two people died and four were injured when a three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi on Thursday.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday ordered the immediate suspension of an Assistant Engineer and a Junior Engineer following the collapse of a three-storey under-construction building in Old Delhi. According to reports from ANI and Hindustan Times, the incident occurred around 9:50 am in Gali Sitara, near the Chawri Bazar Metro station, resulting in two deaths and four injuries.
The building collapsed while a concrete slab was being laid, according to DCP (Central District) Rohit Rajbir Singh. An official from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) stated that construction had been halted about 15 days ago and the collapse happened as workers were removing the support system beneath the roof. The official added that the material used was non-engineered and had not set properly.
Chief Minister Gupta, who visited the site, ordered an FIR to be filed against the contractor and directed officials to provide ex-gratia financial assistance to the affected families. She stated that any official found to have overlooked safety negligence would face consequences and urged the public to follow structural safety standards.
Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu also directed the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, MCD, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to conduct intensive search and rescue operations. DCP Singh noted that an adjacent building is in a precarious condition and residents of neighbouring buildings have been evacuated.
