Two killed as under-construction building collapses in Old Delhi
Rescue operations are underway in Chawri Bazaar after a three-storey building collapsed, leaving several people feared trapped.
Two people were killed and several others are feared trapped after a portion of an under-construction three-storey building collapsed in the Gali Sattara area of Old Delhi on Thursday, according to The Indian Express. The incident occurred near the Chawri Bazaar Metro station at approximately 9.50 am while slabs were being poured on the third floor.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDF) arrived at the site to conduct rescue operations. Three people were rescued and are receiving treatment at Lok Nayak hospital. A Delhi Fire Services official stated that rescue efforts are difficult because the building is located in a narrow lane only 3 to 4 feet wide, making it nearly impossible for cranes and earthmovers to enter.
DCP Rohit Rajbir Singh said the building was being illegally constructed and that a letter had been sent to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to halt the work. He added that the owners have been identified and will be arrested. Police have also evacuated residents from neighbouring buildings as their structures became weak due to the collapse.
The MCD has suspended a Junior Engineer and an Assistant Engineer for alleged dereliction of duty. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who visited the site, said an FIR has been registered against the contractor. She urged those involved in construction to be mindful of safety measures.
