CJP activists appear before Crime Branch in Jantar Mantar case

Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka joined the investigation at the Rajouri Garden office on Thursday.

Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka reached the Delhi Police Crime Branch office in Rajouri Garden on Thursday. According to ANI, they appeared after being summoned to join the investigation into a trespassing case at Jantar Mantar.

The investigation involves an incident on October 13 when the activists allegedly entered the denotified protest site to unfurl the national flag. The Hindustan Times reported that the group was protesting against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and raised slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Das and Ranka had previously missed a summons scheduled for October 22. Ashutosh Ranka stated that they had informed the police they could not attend the previous date and were waiting for the agency to confirm new timings.

The two leaders were released from judicial custody on October 21 following orders from Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) Ritu Raj. They were required to provide personal and surety bonds of Rs 50,000 each until the enquiry concludes.

As part of their release, the activists provided written undertakings to maintain public order. They committed to avoiding protests at Jantar Mantar until the site is legally denotified and stated that any future demonstrations would follow the Constitution.

The cases were transferred to the Crime Branch after the initial detention of the activists and 11 others, including CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde.
