CJP leaders appear before Delhi Crime Branch in Jantar Mantar case
Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka joined the investigation at Rajouri Garden following a summons regarding an October protest.
Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka reached the Delhi Police Crime Branch office in Rajouri Garden on Thursday. They appeared after being summoned to assist with an investigation into trespassing at the denotified Jantar Mantar protest site in October, according to reports by Hindustan Times, ANI and The News Mill.
The investigation relates to an incident on October 14 where Das, Ranka, Ajinkya Shinde, and 11 others allegedly entered the de-notified site. The group was protesting alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and raised slogans against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
The activists had previously missed a scheduled appearance on October 22. Ranka stated that they had informed the police they could not attend that date and were waiting for the agency to confirm new timings.
Das and Ranka were previously held in judicial custody following an October 13 protest where police alleged they entered the area through private premises and violated peace conditions. They were released from Tihar jail on October 21 after Special Executive Magistrate (SEM) Ritu Raj ordered them to provide personal and surety bonds of Rs 50,000 each.
In written undertakings, the two leaders promised not to disturb public tranquillity or breach the peace. They also pledged not to hold protests at Jantar Mantar until the site is denotified according to the law, committing to conduct future protests within the constitutional framework.
