UP Deputy CM welcomes two-year service extension for Agniveers
Uttar Pradesh leaders Brajesh Pathak and Suresh Khanna congratulated the Centre on the decision to extend the Agnipath scheme tenure.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak on Thursday welcomed the Union Cabinet's decision to extend the service period for Agniveers by two years. According to ANI, Pathak stated the move addresses a long-standing demand of personnel recruited under the Agnipath scheme.
The Deputy Chief Minister said the decision was made by the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He offered his congratulations to Agniveers from Uttar Pradesh following the announcement.
Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Suresh Khanna also supported the extension, noting it would help personnel gain more skills and experience. Khanna said that while 25 per cent of Agniveers are taken into regular armed forces service, the other 75 per cent will gain from the additional two years.
Under the revised arrangement, the original four-year engagement remains. After this term, 25 per cent of Agniveers will receive immediate regular employment based on merit.
The remaining 75 per cent can choose a second two-year period. This second term includes higher pay, an improved Seva Nidhi package, and cumulative seniority benefits. After six years of total service, these individuals can apply for regular soldier enrolment if they meet selection criteria.
The change follows a review of the first four years of the Agnipath scheme. The Defence Forces reported positive feedback regarding the discipline, motivation, physical fitness, and technological adaptability of the Agniveers.
