Cristiano Ronaldo retires from Portugal national team after 23 years

The 41-year-old forward ends an international career that included six World Cup appearances and a record 146 goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo announced on Thursday that he is retiring from his international career with Portugal. The 41-year-old forward shared the news through an emotional video message on social media, stating he would hand back the national team's number 7 shirt.

According to reports from The Times of India, The Hindu, and The New Indian Express, Ronaldo's international career began in August 2003. Over 23 years, he made 234 appearances and scored a record-breaking 146 goals for the country.

Ronaldo captained Portugal to its first major trophy at Euro 2016 and helped the team win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. He also represented Portugal in six FIFA World Cup editions.

The announcement follows a period of tension with coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo's last appearance for the national side was on September 24 during a 1-0 victory over Wales in the Nations League. After being left on the bench for a subsequent match, Ronaldo left the training camp.

The Portuguese Football Federation expressed "deep gratitude and immense admiration" for his service, calling him the "greatest player of all time." The federation intends to organise a tribute for the player.

While retiring from international duty, Ronaldo is not retiring from professional football. He is expected to continue playing for the Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr until the end of the current season.
