Two engineers suspended after building collapse in Delhi's Chawri Bazaar

Two people died and four were injured when a three-storey under-construction building collapsed in Old Delhi on Thursday.

A three-storey building under construction collapsed in Gali Sitara, near the Chawri Bazaar metro station, on Thursday morning, according to reports from The Pioneer and Moneycontrol. The incident, which occurred around 9.50 am, resulted in two deaths and left four people injured.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) suspended Assistant Engineer Mohd Naeem and Junior Engineer Aman Dalal with immediate effect. The Deputy Commissioner of the Old Delhi zone cited apparent negligence of duties, while Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta ordered an inquiry and directed police to register an FIR against the contractor.

Delhi Fire Services (DFS) teams recovered two bodies from the debris. Local residents had moved four injured people to a hospital before the DFS arrived. The identities of the deceased have not yet been established.

An MCD official stated that construction work had been halted approximately 15 days ago. The collapse reportedly occurred while workers were removing the support system beneath the roof. One official noted that the material used was non-engineered and had not set properly.

Rescue operations involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Police, and the Delhi Disaster Management Authority are ongoing. Residents of nearby buildings were evacuated after officials found an adjoining structure was in a fragile condition.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that anyone found guilty will face strict action as per the law. She also directed officials to ensure medical treatment for the injured and financial assistance for the affected families.
