Delhi government notifies new slum rehabilitation policy for 5 lakh families

The policy aims to provide permanent 1-BHK homes to nearly 20 lakh people living in settlements established before January 1, 2025.

The Delhi government has notified the Delhi Slum and Jhuggi Jhopri Relocation and Rehabilitation Policy, 2026, to provide permanent housing for approximately 4 to 5 lakh families, according to ANI and The Indian Express.

The policy is expected to benefit nearly 20 lakh people living in slum settlements across the national capital. It extends eligibility to include all slum settlements established before January 1, 2025, whereas earlier schemes included settlements up to 2015.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the objective is to ensure every eligible family gets a permanent home to live safely and with dignity. She stated that the policy is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Antyodaya' and 'Garib Kalyan'.

Under the new framework, the government will prioritise in-situ rehabilitation or provide alternative accommodation within a 3-km radius of existing sites. This is intended to ensure residents remain close to their jobs, schools, and social networks.

Eligible families will receive 1-BHK (one bedroom, hall and kitchen) flats. The residential complexes will also include schools, Anganwadi centres, healthcare facilities, and playgrounds.

Housing will be allotted through a computerised draw of lots, monitored by a centralised GIS-based digital platform. Families with persons with disabilities will receive priority for ground-floor allotments, while the government will manage maintenance for five years after shifting.
