Karnataka aims to add 30 GW renewable energy capacity in five years

The state plans to increase its renewable energy output by 5 to 7 GW annually, according to the Energy Department.

Karnataka intends to expand its renewable energy capacity by nearly 30 GW over the next five years, according to The Hindu.

Energy Department Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta announced the roadmap at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit 2026 in New Delhi. He stated that the state expects to increase its renewable energy output by 5 to 7 GW every year.

The state's renewable energy capacity has risen from 16 GW in 2022 to 23 GW currently. Gupta noted that Karnataka led the country in wind capacity addition during 2024–25 with 1,331 MW.

Under a Resource Adequacy Plan, the department intends to add 41.5 GW of new solar and wind capacity along with roughly 11,000 MWh of battery energy storage by 2034–35. Current work includes a 250 MW solar project with 1,100 MWh of storage at Ryapte.

Divya Prabhu G.R.J., managing director of the Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Corporation, said renewable energy makes up about 67 per cent of the state's total power capacity.

Gupta invited domestic and international investors to the state, citing investor-friendly policies, automatic land conversion, and plug-and-play infrastructure as key advantages.
