Maharashtra ranks second in renewable energy assessment for solar capacity

The state has commissioned 7,000 MW of solar power for agricultural use under a major scheme.

Maharashtra has secured second place among general-category states in the Renewable Energy State Assessment Framework 2025-26, according to Urban Acres. The state reported 7,000 MW of commissioned solar capacity intended for agricultural power supply.

Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan presented the award at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Thursday. Maharashtra Minister of State for Energy Meghna Sakore-Bordikar and Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Abha Shukla received the recognition.

The state's performance is linked to the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana 2.0, which aims to produce decentralised solar power for agricultural feeders. While the scheme has a target of 16,000 MW, approximately 7,000 MW has been commissioned so far.

The programme has solarised more than 4,500 agricultural feeders and 1,200 substations. These installations are reportedly benefiting more than 18 lakh farmers.

Maharashtra's strategy includes distribution-infrastructure upgrades, smart metering, digital systems, and energy storage. The state also focuses on policy reforms and investment promotion to improve electricity reliability and affordability.

The remaining awarded capacity under the scheme is currently at various stages of implementation. Future progress will depend on integrating solar generation with storage and smart-metering systems.
