Karnataka sugarcane farmers withdraw protest after price and profit-sharing deal

Farmers accepted a rate of Rs 3,600 per tonne following discussions involving Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi.

Sugarcane farmers in Belagavi have withdrawn their protests after agreeing to a price of Rs 3,600 per tonne and a profit-sharing arrangement with sugar factories, according to the Deccan Herald.

Chunappa Pujeri, the state president of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene, said the price was announced by Public Works Department Minister and District In-charge Satish Jarkiholi.

The agreement includes a formula where farmers receive 75 per cent of the share from increased sugar prices, while factories retain 25 per cent.

Pujeri noted that the current price is based on sugar costing Rs 45 per kg, but farmers hope to reach Rs 4,350 per tonne if sugar prices rise to Rs 55 per kg during the 2026-27 season.

The farmers' leader stated that they would meet Deputy Commissioners to request that this Rs 3,600 rate be applied across the entire state.

While the crushing season is set to begin on Friday, Pujeri said the movement to increase the central minimum selling price of sugar will continue until a November 26 deadline.

Pujeri also called for the state government to provide a Rs 1,000 per tonne support price and warned of repercussions during the winter legislature session if demands are not met.
