Two cyclones cause damage and 12 deaths in Andhra Pradesh

Cyclone Arnab and Cyclone Murasu hit the Andhra Pradesh coast, affecting crops and causing significant financial losses.

The back-to-back landfall of Cyclones Arnab and Murasu on the Andhra Pradesh coast resulted in 12 deaths, according to The Hindu. Cyclone Arnab made landfall on October 28, while Cyclone Murasu crossed the coast on November 3.

Damage from Cyclone Arnab in Andhra Pradesh is estimated at approximately ₹4,526 crore. Initial assessments for Cyclone Murasu indicate that about 52,500 hectares of standing crops were affected in the state.

In southern Odisha, the first cyclone damaged nearly 90,000 hectares of standing crops. Personnel from Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Karnataka have travelled to Andhra Pradesh to assist in rescue efforts.

The Union government is expected to provide the first instalment of funds to the affected states following preliminary assessments of the flood-hit areas.

The deployment of the Real Time Governance Society (RTGS) and other technologies helped reduce property damage and human casualties. In October 2014, during Cyclone Hudhud, Andhra Pradesh reported 63 deaths and damage of nearly ₹22,000 crore.
