External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced the funding for roads, health and defence projects during a meeting in Antigua and Barbuda.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced an extension of a $500 million line of credit for Guyana on Wednesday. The funding is intended for projects involving defence, health and roads, according to The Hindu.
The announcement was made in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda, during a meeting between Jaishankar and Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
The two leaders discussed increasing cooperation in several sectors, including agriculture, energy, digital technology, infrastructure development, capacity building, trade and investment. A Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) statement said the new credit will bolster the development partnership between the two nations.
India and Guyana also signed three agreements. These include cooperation on Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and the operation of a Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-like system in Guyana.
The other agreements involve grant assistance for Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) and the supply and installation of manufacturing projects for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs).
Earlier on Wednesday, Jaishankar attended a breakfast meeting for Commonwealth business leaders and heads of government, where he encouraged partners to diversify and de-risk.
