IMA wants CBFC to refuse certification for Sunny Deol film Suryaa
The Indian Medical Association has objected to the film's teaser, which depicts violence against healthcare workers and alleges corruption among doctors.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has requested the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to deny certification to the Hindi film Suryaa: Ant Se Aarambh Tak, according to The Times of India. The film, starring Sunny Deol and Ravi Kishan, is scheduled for release on Nov 20.
The IMA's objection follows the release of a teaser on Oct 19. The association claims the teaser shows a father assaulting doctors and nursing staff in a hospital after alleging that doctors write commission slips instead of prescriptions.
IMA national president Dr Anilkumar J Nayak urged the board in a Nov 4 representation to deny certification under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, and 2026 certification guidelines. The association stated the objectionable content is the core theme and cannot be fixed by simple excisions.
The IMA has sought a screening for its representatives and the presence of an IMA-nominated medical expert during the examination. It also requested a hearing before any decision is made and asked for a written, reasoned decision.
The association wants scenes showing violence against healthcare workers as heroic to be deleted, along with dialogues regarding corruption. It also requested a prominent disclaimer stating the film does not represent the medical profession.
The IMA has asked for priority consideration due to the release date and has reserved the right to approach the courts.
