Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi reaches Chennai Open quarterfinals
The 17-year-old became the first Indian woman to reach a WTA Tour-level singles quarterfinal in 14 years.
Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 Chennai Open on Wednesday by defeating Poland's Weronika Falkowska 6-4, 6-3. According to Rediff, the 17-year-old is the first Indian woman to reach a WTA Tour-level singles quarterfinal in 14 years.
The last Indian woman to achieve this feat was Sania Mirza in February 2012 at the Pattaya Open, Sportstar reported. Revathi, who is ranked 669th in the world, overcame Falkowska, who is ranked 277th, in a match that included several service breaks and unforced errors.
The Coimbatore player noted that she was not at her best, particularly with her serve, but found ways to win against an aggressive opponent. She said she was hesitant at the start but decided to go for it rather than holding back.
Revathi's season has included winning a professional title at an ITF event in Lagos. She also recently moved her training base from the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain to the Elite Tennis Center in southern France, News18 reported.
The teenager will next face USA's Robin Montgomery for a place in the semifinals.
