Nadda directs completion of AIIMS Awantipora construction by March 2027

Union Health Minister JP Nadda reviewed the progress of the institute's infrastructure, equipment procurement, and staff recruitment.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Thursday directed authorities to finish all remaining construction at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Awantipora, by March 2027. According to ANI, the Minister reviewed the progress of the institute's construction and operationalisation in Jammu and Kashmir.

During the review, Nadda assessed infrastructure development, the procurement of medical equipment and furniture, and the recruitment of faculty and other personnel. He noted that major buildings are already finished and commended the CPWD and other agencies for their work despite terrain challenges.

Phase-I buildings, including the OPD Block, registration block, residential buildings, and hostels, are complete. The remaining academic, administrative, and hospital infrastructure is being developed in phases. Nadda instructed HITES and the Executive Director of AIIMS Awantipora to coordinate closely to speed up the procurement of laboratory equipment and medical furniture.

Procurement approval has been granted for 180 medical equipment items worth Rs 59.41 crore, with Notices of Award issued for 140 items. The Ministry has also approved 652 manpower positions, including 150 security personnel, to support OPD and related services.

The target for starting OPD services is before December 2026, while IPD services are proposed for July 2027. Academic activities, such as MBBS classes, are expected to begin for the 2027–28 session in June or July 2027.
