Karnataka Cabinet approves ₹1,118 crore for Bengaluru road project

The additional funds will help complete the 134-km road connecting Attibele to Nelamangala and the Kempegowda International Airport.

The Karnataka Cabinet has approved an additional ₹1,118.50 crore for the 134-km Anekal–Sarjapur–Varthur–Airport–Nelamangala road project, according to The Hindu and News18.

Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said the funds will accelerate construction, particularly on the Gunjur–Varthur stretch in east Bengaluru. The project, which is being implemented by the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL), connects Attibele, Sarjapur, Dommasandra, Gunjur, Varthur, Whitefield, the Kempegowda International Airport and Nelamangala.

Initially sanctioned in 2017 with an estimated cost of ₹2,290.50 crore, the revised project cost has increased to ₹3,409 crore. This increase is due to higher land acquisition costs, price adjustments, delays, and additional works. Of the new allocation, ₹266.83 crore is for land acquisition and ₹347.54 crore is for price adjustments.

The project includes a 1.92-km elevated corridor at Varthur and flyovers at six railway crossings: Gollahalli, Basavanahalli, Rajanukunte, Narayanapura, Kadugodi and Varthur Junction. The upgrading of SH-35 was taken up in 2019 with an original deadline of 2021.

Minister Gowda said he sought the proposal from the Public Works Department (PWD) following a field inspection after the condition of Varthur Kodi and Sarjapur Road drew criticism. He noted that the Cabinet expressed displeasure over delays and instructed officials to ensure early completion.

Gowda thanked Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and the Cabinet for approving the allocation, stating that the pace of work will gain momentum.
