Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has instructed the Karnataka Milk Federation to lower curd rates by Rs 2 per litre following recent price hikes.
Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has requested the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to lower the price of Nandini curd by Rs 2 per litre, according to reports from The New Indian Express and The Indian Express.
The move comes after the price of one litre of curd rose from Rs 54 to Rs 68 on November 1. The price for a half litre also increased from Rs 28 to Rs 34.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Shivakumar said the milk price increase was related to higher fat content in certain variants. He stated that increasing milk prices would benefit 11 lakh farmer families.
A KMF official said the federation is waiting for official communication from the Chief Minister's office before the KMF Board discusses a final decision. The official noted that the decision also depends on union members.
The Bangalore Hotels Association (Regd) criticised the price hike, stating it would create a financial burden for consumers and the hospitality industry. Some hotels have reportedly raised tea and coffee prices by Rs 5 to Rs 8 per serving.
BAMUL president D K Suresh defended the revision, saying milk prices in Karnataka remain lower than in several other states. He added that the hike would support 11 lakh farmer families and 25 lakh milk sellers.
