Centenarian lawyer PB Menon elevated to senior advocate by High Court

The 100-year-old lawyer, who has practised for 77 years, is the only district court practitioner to receive the designation.

PB Menon, a 100-year-old lawyer, has been elevated to the position of senior advocate by the High Court, according to The New Indian Express. Menon has been practising law for 77 years and is the only lawyer in India practising in a district court to receive this elevation, he said.

The lawyer, who turned 100 on October 10, stated that his elevation is a big honour. He noted that while there are a little over 700 senior advocates in India, all others are from higher courts.

Menon said he initially studied law because his parents decided his career, despite having no interest in the subject. After completing his course at Madras Law College and an apprenticeship under the then Advocate General at Madras High Court, his father called him back to Palakkad to practise.

He initially practised criminal law before switching to civil cases. He said a turning point occurred when a judge advised him to take up civil law after observing his aptitude during proceedings in Fort Cochin.

Regarding the current legal system, Menon said that changes made to save time and prevent docket explosion have had an adverse effect. He stated that the system has degraded and that a transformation to suit the present day is necessary.

Menon expressed that his wife, Malathy Menon, is not with him to share his happiness.
