Maharashtra aims for 30 per cent electric vehicle registrations by 2030

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the target during the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric launch in Pune.

Maharashtra intends for electric vehicles to constitute 30 per cent of all new vehicle registrations by 2030, according to a Moneycontrol report. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared this goal on Wednesday during the launch of the Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric at the company's Chakan facility in Pune district.

Fadnavis stated that the state government is working to transition Maharashtra from an automobile manufacturing hub into a global centre for future mobility. He noted that the state's ambitions include leadership in battery technology, semiconductors, automotive artificial intelligence, and research.

The government is focusing on expanding charging infrastructure, including fast-charging stations along highways and sustainable mobility corridors on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg. Fadnavis also mentioned promoting battery recycling facilities.

The Chief Minister highlighted that Maharashtra currently accounts for more than 20 per cent of India's automobile production. He urged Mercedes-Benz to use its Chakan plant to produce vehicles for Asian and global markets.

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, who attended the event, said the start of local electric vehicle production is a milestone showing Pune's readiness for future mobility. She added that the government would support the industry and assist investors with problems.

Mercedes-Benz has invested approximately Rs 3,200 crore in its Maharashtra operations, PTI reported. Fadnavis noted that around 650 prospective customers expressed interest in the GLC Electric within 36 hours of its launch.
