Medak Collector urges farmers to avoid paddy cultivation during yasangi

District Collector Pratima Singh has requested farmers to switch to crops requiring less water due to deficit rainfall caused by El Nino.

Medak Collector Pratima Singh has called upon farmers to cultivate alternative crops instead of the water-intensive paddy crop during the yasangi season, according to Telangana Today.

The Collector stated in a press statement on Thursday that the district received deficit rains during the year due to El Nino, leaving little water resources available.

While groundwater is currently available in some areas, Singh said the groundwater table would further deplete during the next two months when crops dry up.

Singh has asked farmers to choose crops that require minimum water to manage the available resources.

The Collector has directed officials from the agriculture, irrigation, and revenue departments to hold village-level educative meetings to sensitise farmers on the need for alternative crops.
