Meghalaya on track for 39th National Games, says technical committee

The Games Technical Conduct Committee expressed satisfaction after inspecting proposed venues in Shillong and Jowai.

Meghalaya is making progress in its preparations for the 39th National Games scheduled for next year, according to Rediff. Games Technical Conduct Committee (GTCC) chairperson Sunaina Kumari confirmed the status on Thursday following a four-day visit to the state.

A five-member GTCC, which was appointed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on October 14, assessed various sites in Shillong and Jowai between November 2 and November 5. Kumari told reporters that the committee was satisfied with the current development of infrastructure.

The chairperson noted that different government departments and agencies are coordinating well to ensure the event is hosted successfully. She also acknowledged the efforts of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the Deputy Chief Ministers, and Sports Minister Dr Vijay Kumar.

The state has suggested hosting 39 sporting disciplines across Tura, Jowai, and Shillong. This list remains tentative, as the IOA will make the final decision in consultation with the GTCC, including the potential inclusion of taekwondo.

Proposed locations include the Shillong Golf Club, Umiam Lake, the North-Eastern Hill University campus, and the JN Sports Complex. The JN Sports Complex has been suggested as the site for the opening ceremony.

The specific dates for the National Games have not been announced yet.
