IIT Delhi remains India's top university in QS Asia Rankings 2027

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi retained its top national position despite falling seven places to 66th in the regional rankings.

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has retained its status as the highest-ranked Indian university in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2027, according to reports by The New Indian Express, News18 and Times Now. While it remains the top institution in the country, it slipped from 59th to 66th place compared to last year.

The rankings, released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds on Tuesday, show that all six of India's highest-ranked universities experienced a decline in their positions. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru ranked 79th in Asia, followed by IIT Bombay at 83rd, IIT Madras at 85th, IIT Kharagpur at 90th, and IIT Kanpur at 97th.

The University of Delhi (DU) fell out of the regional top 100, dropping from 95th to 106th. However, several other institutions saw improvements, including Chandigarh University, which rose to 104th, Lovely Professional University, which moved to 154th, and Jamia Millia Islamia, which reached 183rd.

India is the second-most represented higher education system in the rankings with 325 universities, including 34 new entrants. This follows a significant increase from the 24 institutions featured in 2016.

In terms of employer reputation, IIT Delhi secured 7th place in Asia, while IIT Bombay ranked 10th. QS officials stated that India must focus on converting research output into greater global research impact and strengthening international partnerships.
