Telangana farmers face new losses as previous compensation remains unpaid

Farmers in several districts are experiencing fresh crop damage during the Vanakalam season while waiting for funds promised for last year's heavy rains.

Farmers in Telangana are facing new crop losses during the current Vanakalam season while awaiting compensation for damage caused by heavy rains last year, according to Telangana Today.

The state government had promised approximately Rs 275 crore to cover losses from various rain spells. This included Rs 122 crore for damage between October 28 and 31, Rs 109 crore for the August-September period, Rs 28 crore for April 16-27, and Rs 8 crore for March 21-25.

Rythu Swarajya Vedika convenor B Kondal Reddy said that more than a year has passed and the funds have not reached the farmers. He noted that the lack of promised support is adding to financial distress.

In parts of the erstwhile Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda districts, crops have withered. In areas including Jogulamba Gadwal, some farmers have burnt their paddy crops.

In the erstwhile Khammam district and areas such as Aswaraopeta, Sattupally, and Mulkampally, farmers have reportedly lost standing cotton, chilli, and paddy crops. In some locations, rain has drenched harvested stocks.

Farmers are now apprehensive about receiving any assistance for the current Vanakalam season due to the delay in releasing funds for previous losses.
