UN Human Rights Commissioner releases video on Kerala's poverty eradication
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights released an animated video celebrating the state's achievement.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has released a video celebrating Kerala's declaration of being free from extreme poverty, according to The Hindu.
The animated video was formally released at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday as part of the 40th anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Right to Development.
Kerala was declared free from extreme poverty on November 1, 2025, during a special Assembly session for Kerala Piravi, following a five-year process under the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.
The OHCHR noted that Kerala's experience shows the value of dialogue and that development responses putting people at the centre ensure equity, participation and dignity.
The video explains that the state used a multidimensional approach to define poverty as an intersecting deprivation of capabilities and freedoms rather than just a lack of income.
Nearly 1 million citizens identified vulnerable families using indicators such as homelessness and chronic illness, while more than 64,000 households received tailored support through individual micro plans.
